"I'm delighted that the Foreign Office is involved in the work of the RLN. I enjoyed meeting students from Hornsey Girls' School last year and the office is working with an additional school this year - Gladesmore Community School. I think we learn more when we see how skills and knowledge can be applied in the real world. That is why I applaud the work being done by the Regional Language Network on the Business Language Champions Programme - giving young people an insight into the importance of languages in the real world. As globalisation brings countries closer together, language skills will become increasingly valuable. If British businesses are to succeed in today's open, global economy, they need to be able to interact with clients and customers not just in Europe and the US but also China, India and the Gulf. The same is true for government, charities and aid organisations. The Foreign Office is proud to be involved in this programme and hopes other organisations will follow suit and demonstrate their commitment." RLN London supported Camden Enterprise Week with a seminar on growing an international business from a languages and cultural perspective - with France and Belgium particularly in mind. You can download our presentation (as well as others relating to languages and international communications) from Camden Borough Council's website. Making the most of Community Languages11 June 2007 When Londoners are conservatively estimated to speak 300 languages, it begs the question - how can we harness this linguistic diversity for new business, employment and training opportunities? With these objectives in mind, Regional Language Network held this very successful consultation event with over 40 delegates in attendance. ITIC 21 - The Institute of Translation and Interpreting's Anniversary Conference21-22 April 2007 ITI Conferences are always a combination of interesting presentations, fine company and an active social programme, and this year was no exception. Held at the Rembrandt Hotel in Knightsbridge, the event included presentations from Juana Lahousse-Juárez, Director General for Translation and Interpreting at the European Parliament - as well as spots from both Gill Musk at CILT on National Occupational Standards, and Jane Collis from Regional Language Network London - on opportunities for linguists in the run-up to the 2012 Games.
