Marketing and promotions

Should I translate my packaging?

Market your brand and products overseas, or to non-English speaking customers in London. To avoid costly mistakes, adaptation to your new markets is important - and creative input which goes beyond translation is essential when looking at logos, foreign advertising, multilingual packaging and overseas promotions.

You can increase your sales and reach by adapting your marketing communications, video and audio materials with the help of professional foreign language marketing, media and promotion services.

Choosing the right marketing and promotions supplier

Suppliers need to know how to adapt the visual and written content to the local culture as well as have experience of the design and production process. Their service should also be in line with general good practice for translation.

  • Involve in-country or community contacts in the development and review stages.
  • Adapt the language and imagery of your brand, logo, slogan, promotions, advertising and PR to the local culture. Numbers, colours and symbols are important.
  • Show English copy to your translator at an early stage to be sure that it will translate easily into foreign languages.
  • Tell designers in advance which foreign languages will be involved as the length and text direction may vary from English. Where languages read right to left, e.g. Arabic and Hebrew, the layout will need to switch for the text and sequences of pictures.
  • Packaging needs to take account of the brand name and logo, local use of images and colour and legislation in the country.
  • Work with specialist media services for subtitling, dubbing and voice-overs for film and video and specialist technical services for localising software.
  • Expect to pay up to twice as much for translating marketing materials as you would for translation of information-only text.
